Collection: Lucile Evans

Lucile Evans (1894–1993) was an accomplished American painter and printmaker who maintained a significant connection to the Washington, D.C., art community for many years. She began her career in California, studying at the Otis Art Institute and Chouinard Art Institute, and exhibited there alongside prominent European artists like Paul Klee. After relocating to the East Coast, Evans became a recognizable figure in D.C., where she was a part of the Washington Workshop Center for the Arts and had multiple solo exhibitions in local galleries. Her work was featured and won awards in three exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery and is held in the permanent collections of major D.C. institutions, including the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, The Phillips Collection, and the Howard University Art Gallery. Though she was not specifically named as part of the core group of the Washington Color School, her active exhibition record and presence in the city’s institutions show her extensive contribution to the D.C. art scene.
